It could take a lifetime to discuss the amazing changes technology has brought us, especially when it comes to product design and advancement. It seems as each year passes even more previously unrealistic, sci-fi-like objects are coming to life. Do you guys remember the very first time you heard about a car that could park on its own? How about the interactive windshields? These things are going to (sooner than we may realize) be ordinary, everyday things. I guess the question to ask ourselves is… are we ready?
I came across an article the other day that discussed the founder of Tesla, Elon Musk. According to the piece, he thinks driving isn’t going to be something humans will do in the future. He believes the future of driving will be completely in the hands of vehicles because it will be proven that cars are much better at staying safe on the road than humans. Of course, I’m paraphrasing a bit and I would recommend checking out the article for yourself to get a better idea.
This got me thinking. I mean, what does this actually mean for the future of mankind? While this may just be one change that could occur, it kind of makes my head spin a little bit. Kind of in the same way thinking about being 80 years old or life after death can make you feel… or aliens (if you’re into those kinds of things). I’ve always been a huge thinker. I think more than I would like to admit. My mind doesn’t seem to ever slow down or take a break.
It’s so mind blowing to me to imagine not driving. While it seems like such a scary thing, I can’t help but wonder how many lives it would save. Although, I’m not certain avoiding driving altogether and making it illegal would be the best way to keep people safe. There are things we do on a daily basis that may not be the safest, but some of those things offer the best growth and excitement. Could you imagine if instead of having your eyes on the road while taking a road trip, you could instead read a book, take a nap or stare at the stars through your moon roof?
What does this mean for the future of being a human? Will computers and robots completely take over the things that we do on a daily basis? What will be the motivation to get anything done? Or do you think that won’t change? What will our health look like in a world where we barely have to lift a finger in order to get through the day?
Thinking back to grocery shopping when I was a kid, I don’t think I ever would have imagined going into a shop and walking about without speaking to a single human being. Now, that is something that happens often. The self checkout is wonderful and all, but I find it to be a bit depressing. Talking to our neighbors is even slowly becoming ‘outdated’. While I’m all for change, I’m worried some of these changes could make us less intelligent and lazy individuals.
What do you think?
